Shorebird scavenger hunt: may 4-11, 2026

Head to the Heney Ridge trailhead anytime between May 1 and May 9 to participate. This interactive, in-person scavenger hunt will let you choose your own adventure while learning all about shorebirds and their unique lifestyle. Grab a scavenger hunt sheet out of the box below the trail sign and head out to do some birding! The clues will lead you to the hiding “shorebirds”.

This activity is designed to let families come and go on their own schedule and engage with the information as much or as little as desired. It’s all about getting outside and exploring! All the “shorebirds” can be seen while standing on the trail, though the birds may be found within a zone that runs along either side of Heney Ridge trail. The zone stretches from the trailhead to the first steps. We recommend you dress for the weather so you can search in comfort. Please leave the installed “shorebirds” where you find them but enjoy the coloring pages and bonus information that is also available below the trail sign.

Happy birding!

Bird by Hand - Art Opening

Bird by Hand - Art Opening

sponsored by the net loft

Alaskan Fine Yarn, Gift, Needlework, & Handcraft Supply Store – The Net Loft

with an introduction by Dotty Widmann and David Rosenthal at the Copper River Gallery

Opening May 7th 5:00pm - 7:00pm

Birds in flight are often mesmerizing, their movement feels like art, synchronized and graceful, but the patterns are often too quick for the eye to see. In Flight is a photography exhibit revealing these hidden rhythms, turning fleeting movement into lasting images. Using a stationary aerial camera, this project captures the arcs, ripples, and sweeping paths that waterbirds carve across the sky and along the tides, making the ephemeral visible - and inviting us to look closer, wonder more, and rethink patterns that shape the natural world.

An old Yup’ik dance mask connects Indigenous tradition and shorebird conservation.

Shorebirds that nest in Alaska migrate to New Zealand, South America, and beyond. Shorebirds are part of the diet and culture of Yup’ik people of western Alaska. A dance mask from the early 1900s highlights connections of Yup’ik people with their culture and homeland as well as the importance of including Indigenous peoples in bird and shorebird conservation.

Liliana Coelho Naves

Lili has over two decades of life and work experience in Alaska dedicated to bird conservation, research, and management. She has worked in collaboration with state, federal, Indigenous, nonprofit, and other partners. Lili’s work has blended natural and social sciences, focusing on bird ecology, harvest assessment, Indigenous knowledge, co-management, outreach and education, and place- and culture-based conservation actions. She is a recipient of the Alaska Bird Conference Isleib Award for outstanding contributions to bird conservation. Lili serves as the Director of Conservation for the Alaska Program of the National Audubon Society. Through Our Eyes is a participatory photography research project funded by the National Science Foundation’s EPSCoR program that invited young people in rural, Gulf of Alaska communities to document the role of land- and ocean-based wild foods in their lives. Participants created photographs and written captions showing how harvesting, preparing, and sharing wild foods shape their connection to place and culture. Their images also reflect the challenges they notice and the ways they imagine caring for wild foods into the future. Together, these images and stories offer a youth-led contribution to understanding how environmental change affects community health through impacts on wild foods. Cordova students will be displaying their work on this project.
